Owen Wright
Through the late 1970s and mid 1980s Owen Wright was the hardy annual of grand final day in Auckland premier club rugby league. ayer (1983)
Across his career Wright appeared in a stunning eight Fox Memorial finals, taking out the title on three occasions.
He also won the other two major trophies on offer – the Roope Rooster and Stormont Shield – five times each.
It was an era of huge dominance for Wright’s club side the Otahuhu Leopards, where he teamed up in the back row with another Auckland and New Zealand Kiwis great Hugh McGahan.
Rangy and notoriously hard to tackle, Wright also racked up a half century of appearances for the Auckland representative side, playing in victories over touring sides France in 1981 and Great Britain in ’84.
At stages he lined up alongside brother Nick in the mighty blue jersey.
Wright appeared for the Kiwis on 16 occasions, winning ten matches and scoring a sole try.
In the final two years of his career Wright left Otahuhu and played for the Manukau Magpies.
His service to the Auckland game extended past playing as well, and after such a decorated on-field career Wright served as coach of the region’s representative side for three seasons between 1991 and 1993.
